Magento SEO. The most powerful CMS — and the easiest to break.

Magento (Adobe Commerce) gives total control: editable URL rewrites, native multilingual store views, catalogs of 100,000 SKUs without sweat. In exchange, it demands rare technical rigor. A poorly executed Magento audit stacks 301 chains, indexed facets, and Varnish misses. Here's our method.

Why Magento is different

Magento is enterprise — total control vs maximum complexity.

No imposed limits: you edit URL rewrites, configure each facet, choose your Elasticsearch. But every mis-config pays in red Core Web Vitals and thousands of duplicate pages. The Magento challenge isn't working around the CMS — it's taming its technical surface.

Totally editable URL rewritesMagento allows editing each product, category, CMS page URL via url_key + url rewrites. Unique flexibility among mainstream e-commerce platforms. In exchange: a poorly prepared migration stacks 301 chains and 404 sinkholes.
Layered navigation = SEO trapCategory filters (price, color, size) generate infinite URLs (/jeans?color=blue&size=42&price=100-200). Without clean robots noindex / canonical, Google crawls millions of combinations and dilutes budget.
Native multilingual store viewsOne backend, N store views (FR/EN/AR, or MA/FR/BE). Each store view has its URL (base_url), its metas, its hreflang. Clean config essential or massive duplicate content between store views.
Performance = server architectureMagento out-of-the-box = 4-8 s LCP on large catalog. Varnish Full Page Cache, Redis sessions, Elasticsearch, PHP-FPM tuning, image optimization: every layer counts. Perf audit = infra audit as much as code.

Our 6 Magento levers

Six interventions that transform a Magento site.

Magento requires code + config + infra interventions. Our levers are ranked by measured SEO impact: URL cleanliness > performance > catalog > multilingual.

01

URL rewrites + clean 301s

Full audit of product/category url_keys, detection of 301 chains (3+ redirects), cleanup of 404 sinkholes. Magento url_rewrite table = source of truth, we verify it line by line on large catalogs.

02

Layered navigation under control

robots.txt + canonical config for layered navigation: primary facets (color, brand) indexed, secondary facets (price, size) noindex + canonical to parent category. Avoids millions of crawled facet URLs for nothing.

03

Multilingual store views

FR/EN/AR via native store views: each store view = base_url + locale + hreflang. Verification that each product has its translation, hreflang is consistent, no store view duplicates French.

04

Varnish + Redis + ES performance

Varnish Full Page Cache with clean invalidation (tags), Redis sessions + cache, Elasticsearch tuning for 10k+ SKU catalogs. Native Magento 2 image lazy load + WebP conversion via module. LCP target: < 2.5 s.

05

Enriched product pages

Magento generates Product schema automatically (price, availability, variants). We enrich: long description (300+ words), per-product FAQ (via module), structured reviews (AggregateRating), relevant related products (SEO linking).

06

SEO modules & extensions

Magento has 500+ SEO modules on Marketplace. 80 % are harmful (bloat, conflicts, invalid schema). We keep only the proven: Mageplaza SEO (auto meta), Amasty XML Sitemap, custom modules if needed.

Our Magento stack

The modules we keep. And the ones we disable at kickoff.

Every Magento module adds PHP executed on each request. 50+ active modules = TTFB that explodes. Our typical stack stays minimal: SEO core + perf + reviews. Period.

We keep3
Mageplaza SEOMeta title/description templates + enriched sitemapMarket reference. Templates per category + product. Compatible Magento 2.4+.
Amasty XML SitemapAdvanced XML sitemap (images, hreflang, exclusions)Native Magento is limited. Amasty handles hreflang per store view + URL exclusions.
WebP Images (native Magento 2.4.6+)Automatic WebP conversion + lazy loadSince Magento 2.4.6, native. Before: Yireo WebP or MGS WebP.
Case by case3
Yotpo / TrustpilotStructured reviews + AggregateRatingNative Magento reviews = minimal schema. Yotpo/Trustpilot = complete schema + perf widgets.
Magefan BlogNative blog for editorial contentMagento has no native blog. Magefan = clean alternative, decent perf.
Mirasvit Advanced SEO SuiteAdvanced SEO (schema, breadcrumbs, canonicals)Premium alternative to Mageplaza. Heavy but complete. Mandatory perf audit before.
We disable3
Auto-schema SEO modulesAuto-generated schema via moduleOften produce invalid schema or duplicate with native Magento schema. Audit before activating.
Multiple analytics modulesGA, GTM, Hotjar, FB Pixel via separate modulesEach module = +50 KB JS. Prefer single GTM injecting the rest. Disable duplicates.
Heavy 'all-in-one' themesThemes with 20+ integrated unused modulesMarketplace themes stack features. Audit: disable unused modules in the theme.

Common Magento pitfalls

Five mistakes we find in 70 % of Magento audits.

Magento has more traps than Shopify — huge technical surface — and each trap costs months of indexing. If you recognize a description on the right, act quickly.

01

Layered navigation fully indexed

What we see

Millions of facet URLs crawled: /jeans?color=blue&size=42&sort=price-asc&page=3. Google crawls 500k URLs for a 5k product catalog. Crawl budget blown, real pages indexed late.

What to do

robots.txt + canonical config: primary facets (color, brand) index + canonical to category, secondary facets (price, sort, pagination) noindex. Sitemap limited to canonical URLs only.

02

URL rewrites with 301 chains

What we see

After migration or url_key change: /product-a → /product-b → /product-c (3+ redirects). Google gives up after 2 hops. Orphan pages, lost PageRank, silent 404s.

What to do

Full url_rewrite table audit: each chain reduced to 1 direct redirect. SQL cleanup script. Search Console monitoring → Pages → Not indexed → Soft 404 / redirect.

03

Multilingual store views in duplicate content

What we see

FR + EN + AR via store views but incomplete translations: 50 % of products still in French in EN store view. Google sees massive duplicate content, penalizes all 3 versions.

What to do

Systematic audit: each product + category must have its own translation in each store view. hreflang verified product by product. Untranslated products = temporary noindex until translation.

04

Catastrophic performance (LCP > 5 s)

What we see

Magento out-of-the-box on large catalog: mobile LCP 5-8 s, TTFB 2-3 s, 100+ HTTP requests per page. Mobile users abandon, Core Web Vitals red, SEO plateaus.

What to do

Perf stack: Varnish FPC + invalidation tags, Redis sessions/cache, tuned Elasticsearch, PHP 8.2 + OPcache, native WebP images, JS/CSS merge+minify. Target: LCP < 2.5 s, TTFB < 600 ms.

05

Modules stacked without audit

What we see

150+ active modules: most inherited from theme or previous dev. Each module = executed PHP, DB queries, overhead. TTFB goes from 400 ms to 2 s.

What to do

Module-by-module audit via bin/magento module:status: what's used? Disable dead modules. Keep < 50 active modules on standard Magento 2. Query log + Blackfire monitoring.

How we audit

Four phases. 4 to 6 weeks depending on catalog size.

Magento audit is the longest among our CMS audits: huge technical surface (code + config + infra + catalog). Each phase has its intermediate deliverable so you see progress.

  1. 01

    Technical + infra audit

Screaming Frog crawl (500k URLs if needed), url_rewrite table inspection, Varnish/Redis/ES config, PHP-FPM, active modules. Blackfire / New Relic profiling. Mobile + desktop Lighthouse.

  2. 02

    Catalog + layered nav audit

Audit per category (meta, canonical, layered nav config, robots filter), per product (url_key, meta, schema, reviews, related products). Sampling on > 10k SKU catalogs.

  3. 03

    Store views + hreflang audit

If multilingual: each store view inspected (base_url, locale, translations, hreflang per URL). Inter-store duplicate content detection. Multilingual competitor benchmark.

  4. 04

    Deliverable + roadmap

60-100 page document with detailed findings + 6-12 month roadmap ranked by effort/impact. 90-min debrief with your tech + marketing + ops teams.

Magento audit pricing

How much does a Magento SEO audit cost?

Price depends on catalog size (10k vs 100k SKUs changes everything), number of store views, and scope (SEO audit alone vs SEO + perf + infra audit). A free audit in 5 days always precedes the paid proposal.

FAQ

What decision-makers ask on a Magento audit.

Six answers to frame your project before the first exchange.

Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce for SEO?
Magento Open Source (formerly CE) covers 90 % of SEO needs: URL rewrites, store views, Elasticsearch, PWA Studio. Adobe Commerce (formerly EE) adds visual Page Builder, customer segmentation, native B2B — useful for large retailers, not required for SEO. If Open Source meets your functional needs, no SEO reason to pay for Adobe Commerce ($10k+/year).
Should I migrate from Magento 1 to Magento 2 for SEO?
Yes, imperatively. Magento 1 is end-of-life since June 2020: no more security, obsolete performance, deprecated modules. A whole generation of Magento 1 sites no longer receives SEO patches (schema, Core Web Vitals). Migration is heavy (typically 6-12 months) but unavoidable. We audit Magento 1 sites and advise a clean migration roadmap with product/category 301 management.
How to handle layered navigation for SEO?
Rule: primary facets (color, brand, type) indexable + canonical to parent category; secondary facets (price, sort, pagination) noindex + robots.txt disallow. Native Magento doesn't handle this separation finely — we add a module or custom XML config (catalog_navigation_filter.xml). For > 50k SKU catalogs, a facet-specific module like Amasty Improved Layered Navigation is often justified.
How long for SEO results after a Magento audit?
Quick wins (robots.txt, canonical, modules deactivation): effect in 2-6 weeks. URL rewrites + 301 cleanup work: 1-3 months for Google to recrawl. Perf tuning (Varnish, Redis, ES): Core Web Vitals impact in 2-4 weeks. Catalog work (translations, enrichments): 3-9 months. The audit activates all three axes in parallel; first gains measured at 1 month.
Is Magento suitable for Morocco (payment, delivery)?
Yes, with modules: CMI (via official module or Stripe/Payzone connector), Morocco delivery modules (Sendit, Chrono Maroc via local modules). Native cash on delivery. MA store view with native MAD currency. Morocco setup = 2-4 specific modules + MA store view config in MAD. Plan 3-5 days dev for a clean Morocco setup.
Do I need an in-house Magento developer to maintain SEO?
For a small catalog (< 2k SKUs), no: admin config is enough for 80 % of SEO levers. For a large catalog (> 10k SKUs) or multi-store, yes: URL rewrites, custom modules, perf tuning require specialized Magento dev (Magento 2 PHP + XML + Knockout). Alternative: external provider (us or tech partner) on retainer. Plan 2-5 days/month of Magento dev for active SEO.
